**I LOVE plants that can be neglected and still thrive well!** **GROWN ON OUR FARM HERE IN TENNESSEE**.................. Hi ya'l, ... here's one from Russia with love.... Russian-Olive Tree... (Elaeagnus angustifolia L.) from Russia... native to Asia, Afghanistan, and Kazakhstan to Turkey and Iran.... grown by Parkinson by 1633, and was also grown in Germany in 1736..... as a drought-resistant ornamental plant for its scented flowers, edible sweet fruit, attractive yellow foliage, and black bark......small tree growing to 5–8ft.in height. Its stems, buds, and leaves have a dense covering of silvery shine, leaves are alternate, lanceolate broad, with a smooth margin. The highly aromatic flowers, produced in clusters of long with a four-lobed creamy yellow calyx; they appear in early summer and are followed by clusters of fruits, a small cherry-like drupe, orange-red covered in silvery shine. The fruits are edible and sweet... Tree can fix nitrogen in its roots, enabling it to grow on bare mineral substrates...... Russian-olive thrives on poor soil, has low seedling mortality rates, matures in a few years from seed... The fruit is readily eaten by many species of birdsand wildlife..... The dried powder of the fruits is used mixed with milk for rheumatoid arthritis and joint pains.....Fruits can be eaten out of hand.... It can easily be made into fruit leather, juice, jam and jelly and wine. You can freeze the juice and use it in yogurt or to make a tea. The fruit can be dehydrated as well.... At one time in history (Russian Olive) was championed at one time by various official and unofficial plant groups as good for land and animal. Song birds in particular like the fruit. Turkeys, hens and bears do,too. I personally, look forward to it season every year. Better, it fruits in the middle of our winter. Few plants do this!.....From a nutritional point of view the Elaeagnus has 17 times the lycopene than tomatoes. Yes, 17 times more.
